Trahtemyriv State Historical and Cultural Reserve

About Trahtemyriv State Historical and Cultural Reserve

Established to ensure the protection of archaeological, historical and unique natural monuments, the total area of the reserve is 590 hectares. It has 81 archaeological, 9 natural, and 9 historical sites, including the Trahtemyriv Scythian settlement, a site of the Mousterian culture, the remains of the temples of the Trahtemyriv Monastery, the Cossack cemetery in the village of Trahtemyriv, a multi-layered settlement on Horodky Mountain, and natural monuments: Kaniv dislocations, Rozhynia Krynytsia, and protected tracts. Due to its unique nature, the Trahtemyriv land attracts scientists of various fields: archaeologists, historians, geologists, zoologists, ichthyologists, ornithologists, etc. There are mountains, comfortable floodplain terraces, and Kaniv cliffs known since prehistoric times, so human settlements have been appearing here since ancient times. In the times of Kyivan Rus, the city of Zarub existed here, and in 1147 the chronicle mentions the Trahtemyriv Monastery, which was built on the site of the Zarubskyi Monastery, which was destroyed by the Tatars. In 1576, the monastery operated a hospital for sick Cossacks.

In 1578, Polish King Stefan Batory bequeathed Trahtemyriv to the Cossacks, and a fortress was built here, which became their informal capital, where they elected hetmans, stored supplies, and received ambassadors. The fortress became an outpost of popular uprisings. In 1665, during the suppression of one of these peasant-Cossack uprisings against the Polish gentry, the city and the monastery were destroyed, the remains of the fortress were not found, a memorial cross was erected on the site of the monastery, and only the Cossack cemetery remained. Now, there is a personal hunting ground on these lands that belonged to the former head of „Naftogaz“, Ihor Bakai, and was later transferred to other private individuals, and there is also a private reserve: „The Agrarian and Ecological Association Trahtemyriv“, which uses its nature as elite hunting grounds. The seizure of land into private hands does not contribute to the preservation of pristine nature in the reserve, as the owners donated part of the old Cossack cemetery to build a new estate. Now, a new large castle-style hunting lodge has been built here, with an exclusive trident-shaped tree growing near it.
