About the Monument to Destroyed Churches

The monument to the victims of Stalinist repressions and destroyed churches in Cherkasy was installed in 2004 near St. Michael’s Cathedral. The sculpture depicts a grieving priest in despair over a broken bell.

Historical records indicate that during Soviet rule, 10 Orthodox and 2 Old Believer monasteries, about 700 Orthodox and 5 Old Believer churches, 10 Catholic churches, and 60 synagogues were closed in the region.
