About the Literary and Memorial Museum of Taras Shevchenko
In 1989, to commemorate the 175th anniversary of the birth of Taras Shevchenko, two traditional peasant houses were restored in the village of Morintsi. One is the house of Yakym Boiko, Shevchenko’s maternal grandfather, and the other is the house where the Shevchenko family lived for a year and a half. Since 1992, these houses have been part of the historical and cultural reserve „Taras Shevchenko’s Homeland“. In a house like this, Yakym and Paraskeva Boiko’s daughter Kateryna, the mother of Taras Shevchenko, was born in 1783. This is where she spent her childhood and youth.
As part of a reconstruction project in 2006–2008, an 1896 outbuilding from the village of Shevchenkove was relocated here, along with the restoration of a blacksmith’s workshop and the construction of the Chapel of the Protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saint Tarasiy.
