The Holy Trinity Cathedral in Cherkasy is the main temple of the Cherkasy Diocese of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine. It is located near Castle Hill, where the city’s main Orthodox church once stood. This is one of the most famous modern shrines in Cherkasy, notable for its architecture and significance for the region’s spiritual life. The history of the cathedral dates back to the 17th century. In 1671, a wooden Cossack Trinity Church was built on this site, serving as a place of worship for Zaporizhian Cossacks before their campaigns. Over time, the old church fell into disrepair, and in the mid-18th century, a new wooden building in Baroque style was constructed in its place. In 1863–1864, a new stone Trinity Church was built in Cherkasy – a grand structure with several domes, tall windows with colored glass, and elegant interior decorations.

After the revolution and especially during the Soviet period, the cathedral suffered damage. In the 1950s it was used for purposes other than worship, and in 1961 the old cathedral was completely demolished to make way for the “Hill of Glory” memorial. Nevertheless, the parish did not lose its desire to restore the shrine. In the late 1980s, new construction began, and on October 3, 1991, the Holy Trinity Cathedral parish was officially registered. The architecture of the modern cathedral combines traditional Ukrainian Orthodox features with elements of monumental contemporary design – golden domes, light-colored facades, and a spacious interior with stained-glass windows. The cathedral has become not only a spiritual center but also an architectural landmark of this part of the city. Today, the Holy Trinity Cathedral is an active church, where regular services are held.
