About National Historical and Cultural Reserve „Taras Shevchenko’s Homeland“

The National Reserve „Taras Shevchenko’s Homeland“, a large historical and cultural park in Zvenyhorod district, operates on the basis of immovable cultural heritage and nature monuments in the villages of Shevchenkove (formerly Kerelivka), Morintsy, Budyshche, reconstructed memorial estates in Morintsy, and the Taras Shevchenko Literary and Memorial Museum in Shevchenkove. The reserve includes 43 cultural monuments related to the childhood, life and work of the Genius, Prophet, Great Son of Ukraine Taras Shevchenko. In the village of Moryntsi, where Taras was born to Hryhorii and Kateryna Shevchenko, two peasant houses have been recreated: the house of Taras’s grandfather Yakym Boyko and the house of Kopiya, where the Shevchenko family lived for a year and a half; next to the house of Yakym Boyko is a wooden outhouse built in 1896 and transported from Shevchenkove.

In 1815-1824, Taras Shevchenko lived in the village of Shevchenkove, where a sculpture of a boy Taras stands on the site of the Shevchenko house. In the village there is a literary and memorial museum of Taras Shevchenko, on the territory of which the house of the poet’s parents is recreated in actual size. In the village of Budyshche, a museum room has been decorated in the house of landowner Pavlo Engelhardt, for whom Shevchenko served as a Cossack. Next to the estate there are three thousand-year-old giant oaks, one of which, according to folk legend, was where little Taras hid his drawings. The reserve also includes the village of Vilshana which Taras Shevchenko often mentioned in his works and letters. The village house of culture houses the museum „Vilshanska Svitlytsia“.
