About the Monument to Saint-Surgeon Luka (Valentyn Voino-Yasenetskyi)
Saint-Surgeon Luka is known to medical professionals worldwide as Professor Valentyn Voino-Yasenetskyi. He was unique in combining science and faith, simultaneously serving as a professor of surgery, practicing physician, Orthodox archbishop, educator, and public figure. He worked as a rural doctor and military surgeon, operating on wounded soldiers in hospitals during both World War I and World War II.
Due to his religious beliefs, he endured 11 years in Stalinist prisons and exile. The monument is located on Saint-Surgeon Luka Street, where the region’s largest medical institutions operate.
