About Monument to Taras Shevchenko
The opening of the monument to Taras Shevchenko in Cherkasy took place in 1964, timed to the 150th anniversary of the birth of the great Kobzar.
The authors of the monument were sculptors M. K. Vronsky and O. P. Oliynyk, the architect – V. G. Gnezdilov. The sculpture of Shevchenko was made in the Kyiv workshops of the Art Fund of Ukraine.
The bronze figure of the poet is about 3 meters high, and the granite pedestal is 4 meters. The lower part of the ensemble is complemented by sculptural compositions of characters from Shevchenko’s works – the blind kobzar, Kateryna and Prometheus, symbolizing the struggle for freedom and national values.
