About the Mammoth Hunters’ Settlement
The Mammoth Hunters’ Settlement is a unique Late Paleolithic archaeological site near the village of Mezhyrich in the Cherkasy District. It is one of the most important prehistoric sites in Europe, dated approximately 18,300 – 17,800 years ago, with excavations covering several thousand square meters. At the site, archaeologists discovered four large above-ground dwellings built from mammoth bones and tusks, making it one of the few such settlements in the world. Some structures may have been used for hundreds of years, indicating long-term and repeated occupation by ancient hunters.
In addition to bones and tusks, archaeologists found household structures, storage pits, hearths, flint and bone tools, as well as unique artifacts, such as a bone with engraved markings interpreted as one of the oldest known maps of the area. This settlement served as a winter camp for hunters of the Epigravettian culture. It is located on a promontory between the Ros and Rosava rivers, providing convenient access to water, animals, and a clear view of the surrounding territory.
