Cherkasy is a city on the Dnipro River, which can boast a river station. The first river pier and station appeared here in 1846, when the Dnipro served as an important trade route. At that time, steamboats of Count Maltsev and landowner Pulawski already operated along the river, though navigation was challenging due to the shifting riverbed. In 1858, the First Joint-Stock Company of Steam Navigation on the Dnipro was founded, marking the beginning of regular river transport in the region. Not only local ships but also English, Dutch, and German vessels arrived in Cherkasy.

The Mytnytsia district, where the port is located, developed into a true port town with harbors, warehouses, and maritime professions. In the 20th century, the river port became a major transport hub, especially after the creation of the Kremenchuk Reservoir. In 1961, the port was designated for passenger traffic, with the first passenger ship “Yuriy Gagarin” assigned and a cargo port opened. The passenger station officially opened on November 4, 1962. Today, the river station operates for tourist navigation during the summer season.
