Saint Elijah Church in the village of Subotiv is one of the most prominent examples of 17th-century Ukrainian architecture and is closely associated with Hetman Bogdan Khmelnytskyi. It was built in 1653 at his expense as a family burial church and remains the only surviving structure from the Khmelnytsky estate in Subotiv. Architecturally, the church blends elements of Cossack Baroque and fortified design: thick stone walls, narrow loophole windows, and no domes.

After Khmelnytskyi’s death in 1657, he was buried in the church. However, in 1664, the tomb was destroyed by Polish troops, and the exact location of his remains unknown. In 1954, a symbolic grave was established inside the church. Today, Saint Elijah Church is an active Orthodox parish and part of the National Historical and Cultural Reserve “Chyhyryn.” It continues to draw visitors as a significant site of national, spiritual, and historical heritage.
